The Model Minority

Why I made this film?

Having grown up in a racial majority, I went through a cultural shock when I came to US for high school. I got to experience underpresentation and racial stereotypes for the first time in the 16 years of my life. That is why even the slightest stereotyping weighed me down and I was not the only one who was living through it.

I wanted to create space for conversations that could demystify some of the conflicts caused by stereotypes. So I started by picking up my camera and making this film.

I am the director and producer of The Model Minority Documentary Film Project. I screened the film in Philadelphia, Beijing, and Tianjin and facilitated more than 8 meaningful conversations with over 600 people. But that is not nearly enough, I realize creating space for these types of conversations must be an on-going effort.
